@clacke I remember when every politician said "information super highway" in every speech they gave. Even today, I associate that phrase with #pollies.
Maybe some of them are. I'd guess most of them are primarily looking for lower real estate prices and shorter commutes.
I know that I'm looking for: 1. More frequent face-to-face with grandkids. 2. Ability to work and live in the same area. Shorter commutes are better commutes. 3. Lower real estate prices.
Tax rates are not even on my radar, as everything you get from state and local government will have to be paid for somehow. In some states, it is income tax, in others, it is property tax. Still others have a flourishing industry that can be taxed instead of burdening the citizenry.
As for term limits, I cannot speak to #Michigan's limits, as I don't live there; but #California's limits are beneficial. After a few terms in Sacramento, #pollies become evilized and accustomed to that power and lifestyle. At that point, they stop representing the needs of their constituents and serve only their party and the lobbyists. (In California, they are "legislative advocates", as the state constitution forbids lobbyists.)
I understand that @ahuka believes that people get better at being legislators after a few years on the job. That is likely true. But a few more years and they don't improve. They may know the system better, but they don't use that knowledge to make the state better serve its people, and that is why term limits exist.
California's Governor Newsom makes cautious step toward meeting the state's water needs. https://nu.federati.net/url/287349 [www latimes com]
It is a tiny step, but #California is never going to catch up with its demand with these baby steps. There needs to be a massive statewide effort to meet 100% of projected water requirements for the next fifty years via #desalination. That includes residential, agricultural, industrial, plus supplementing natural rainfall to preserve forests and replenish ground water, and some extra water which can be made available for neighboring states' needs.
I feel like these #pollies are so busy trying not to displease entrenched interests that they are missing a historic opportunity to lead the way in responding to a 22 year drought that currently affects a giant chunk of the US from California to Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, and beyond. See https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/ and https://www.drought.gov/
I recall a minor !SoCal politician who had previously been a member of the US Communist Party and the US Nazi Party (not at the same time).
The way I heard it, when the election came, every other candidate roasted him for his Nazi history. I'm pretty sure he came in last or close to it.
#California does not allow parties to be involved in local elections (they have to be state or federal level), but multiple #pollies at the state level traveled into the area and spoke out against voting for Nazis.
@lxo Because of pre-existing political views, followers of certain #pollies exaggerate the impact of #COVID-19 vaccines, while minimizing the much larger incidence of long-term cardiac, circulatory, and reproductive damage (and deaths) that the virus itself causes.
I don't like or trust any #polly enough to let their views influence my taking actions that protect myself and those whom I am close to, so I'm not going to swallow some "wing" 's talking points. It is sad to see respected independent thinkers turning off their brains and gulping down such illogic.
@lxo My impression (not being in a country with tax-paid healthcare) is that patients may have to wait for care, not that care is denied. That probably varies by country, but no one talks about being denied care.
Disclaimer: I favor tax-paid basic care, with the possibility of insurer-paid optional / extra care. I have failed to convince US #pollies to implement this since I started communicating about it in 1993.
> Fauci also tackled the deep mistrust that community members have with the government concerning “unfair and unethical” medical treatment in the past.
> “That’s the past, a shameful past, that we have to live with, but we have safeguards in place that will never let that happen again,” Fauci said.
There are no safeguards that cannot be overridden given sufficient pressure, so that’s not something he should have promised. That said, I find it concerning that so many are passing around misinformation about the vaccines being _intentionally designed to be harmful to darker people_. This is a worldwide effort, not just some Southern #pollies teaming up with big pharma and unethical medical researchers. Unless you choose to believe powerful groups are trying to use the vaccines to wipe out all darker people everywhere, there’s nothing to support such #conspiracy_theories.
Well, even if you believe that, there’s no evidence, just your beliefs.
Vandals hit both Pelosi's and McConnell's homes. That is crazy. I assume they weren't in their homes at the time, but still, it is very dangerous to have crazies sending messages by showing up at #pollies' homes.
If they can't assign Secret Service, can they get USDOJ's police forces (FBI, DEA) to step in and protect leading congressionals and their families?
I would be a lot more open to undoing a lot of the lockdowns if the people promoting it were willing to do what is required:
1--personal responsibility: the things we're told every day ... wash hands frequently, mask up if we go out, avoid getting closer than 6 feet / 2 meters from other people;
2--corporate: restructure workplace and processes to reduce the spread of disease, allow workers that suspect themselves to be sick or COVID-exposed to take time off without penalty;
3--government: financial support for people who are off work due to #COVID-19, enforceable right to pursue class-action lawsuits against companies that violate (2) above.
4--political: get the slimy #pollies' dirty hands off of the nation's disease response and prevention process
But it seems that every #anti-lockdown person I see or hear is also an #anti-masker who wants company managers to be able to force sick workers to come in anyway.
Contacted Senator Feinstein and my House Representative over the EARN-IT and LAEDA bills. Senator Kamala Harris' site requires a phone number. It will be bad enough getting rid of these two #pollies' spam target lists. I don't want the hassle of trying to get them to stop robocalling for whatever the politician's newest priority is.
